For those who might not know, the Hildebrandt Brothers were the ones who came up with the original idea for the famous poster back in the day.īut don’t get me wrong I’m not such a Lord of The Rings aficionado myself (I for one prefer the fantastic realism of Michael Whelan whose article I include here), but I do appreciate the fact that Tolkien borrowed so many elements from the Norse mythos and other European folk tales, something which becomes aesthetically apparent in the calendar illustrations that the brothers created back in the mid-1970s. In this particular regard I have discarded the work they did for Star Wars. I’m not including here anything that the brothers produced for Marvel Comics over the years since I do not think that is suitable material to show on the pages of Renegade Tribune – I simply don’t like these so-called (((superheroes))) whatsoever for obvious reasons – same with other artworks which I find just as unsuitable for being a bit too sci-fi oriented. Tim Hildebrandt is not in this ‘Middle-Earth dimension’ any longer, as he died a few years ago (aged 67), but his brother Greg (who is approaching the age of 80 now) continued with his career even when he officially “retired” in 1999 in order to pursue his own artistic ambitions -which in his own words- were inspired by ‘an overwhelming appreciation of the beauty of women’ (by that he meant he would basically work as a pin-up artist mostly). Certainly, as the title of this article indicates, if it were not for the fact that Greg and Tim Hildebrandt created such thorough interpretation of Tolkien’s Lord of The Rings back in the day I wouldn’t have bothered for a split-second to cover these two American twin-brother artists. Readers will be able to follow the complete story of the Hobbits and their part in the quest for the Ring - beginning with Bilbo's fateful visit from Gandalf and culminating in the dramatic climax between Frodo and Gollum atop Mount Doom - while also enjoying over seventy full-page colour paintings and numerous illustrations which accompany this epic tale. This is yours truly coming back with more fantastic-genre art.
